The Zamarr Institute has held three seminar/workshops in the past one year. The first was held at the Transcorp Hilton hotel in Abuja from the 19th-21st April 2006. The workshop was declared open by his Excellency, President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was represented by the Special Adviser, Manufacturing and Private Sector, Alhaji A. A. AbdulKadir. In his words and the words of Ambassador Hubert Charles the country representative of UNESCO, they made it clear that this initiative is worthless without the support of the private sectors contributing in line with their social responsibility. In the communiqué, it was agreed that The Zamarr Institute would repeat such workshops around the country to disseminate the principle that “Early Intervention and Programming will promote the SUCCESS of Children with Special Needs.”
The second workshop was held in the North-West Zone, in Kano on the 5th & 6th of August 2006. The workshop was declared open by the wife of the Governor of Kano State, Her Excellency Hajiya Amina Ibrahim Shekarau who was represented by the Honorable Commissioner for Women Affairs for the State, Dr Fatima Gaji Dantata. The overall responses received indicated that the workshop was effective and as a result still needs to be replicated in all the six geopolitical zones and possibly in all the states to benefit a wider population in the country.
The third workshop was funded by a grant from The World Bank. The Zamarr Institute was nominated as one of the seven recipients of the Bank’s FY 2007 Small Grants Program. The amount was supplemented with funds from a donation from the Nigerian Communications Commission. This workshop was held in the North-East Zone of the country, in Bauchi State. It was attended by participants from four out of the six states in that geopolitical zone, namely Taraba State, Borno State, Adamawa State and the host state. Also in the midst of the Special Educators from special schools and orphanages in the zone was a representative from UNICEF Bauchi Office. This workshop was declared open by the Commissioner for Education for Bauchi State, Alhaji Gumba.
